the crane FM transmitter is a great idea.
I think with power maxed out and a decent half wave or 5/8's wave antenna
hooked up you should be able to get 500 feet very easily...I have heard
reports of much further range out of those things.
They also have a regular SO239 or UHF connecter inside the box on the PCB,
so hooking up 50 ohm coax and a larger antenna would be quite easy.
Of course, they're not cheap, but if you want something that is going to
operate over such a wide area and provide adequit audio, then you'll need to
pay for it.
You can probably find very very inexpensive pocket AM/FM radios with a
headphone jack which can then be connected to PC speakers or some sort of
powered speaker for audio where ever you need it.
