Steve, I sold my 480 but when in c w mode, I don't remember for sure but you 
have to have either the five or the eight  on the number pad on or off or 
you won't know if it is putting out  unless you have a output meter.  The cw 
note, sidetone, will be there in both cases.  Good luck.
