I own both radios.  It depends on what you can get out of your 480.  The 
480 is a very good radio.  The 590 is more of a 440 foot print, not as 
deep and wider, and not a separate control head as the 480.  The 590 
speaks a big more, reads swr, alc and so forth.  I am not positive, but 
think it uses the same speech board.  590 radios are going for around 
$1250 these days which is a good buy.  The receiver is better on the 
590and dsp is better as it is in the i f stage where the 480 is in the 
aduio stage.  It depends on what you can get out of the 480 and your 
financial situation.  As I said above, the 480 is a very good radio.  I 
presume you have the  100 watt version, so internal tuner and all that 
would be similar.  HTH.
