Well I have touched UEB, and I find it to be offensive to say the least.
Since it is mostly grade one, it is slow to read, ungreen because of the
extra resources and paper it demands, and needless.
It had to be decided upon by people who do not use braille in their daily
lives.
Like many ideas, good in theory, terrible in implimentation.
Creating a translation interface like the language tools in Ie, would have
met the need with out messing up braille access world wide.
Reading braille is slow enough as it is. Now with having to read more cells
for the same information, will necessarilly slow it down even more.

Steve:

I'm curious. ... How do you like UEB, and how have you found it in
comparison to ttraditional grade II. Braille?

I'm planning to try it when I get the time here, but just can't make the
switch a priority right now.

If you want, you can reply to this post off list, since it may be considered
to be "off topic" by some.

Harvey,

All versions of Duxbury offer the choice of contracted braille as we know it
or UEB. I have the latest version of Duxbury, and I use both, depending on
the requirements of the job I'm doing.
