Yep, did that, main problem is the highs just aren't there.  I've been 
doing this audio stuff with a good friend who is a broad cast engineer 
since 1970.  In my opinion, it just isn't a good sounding  microphone. 
Many of the people I get on the air every day with are picky about 
audio, what some may consider good or o.k., we may not.  I have run the 
hand microphone on the 590 and it actually isn't bad at all, really 
better than the mfj desk microphone.  Oddly enough, the same hand 
microphone sounds terrible on the 990, go figure.  Maybe that is why 
Kenwood doesn't give you a microphone with the 990 which when I bought 
that radio I thought was a little odd.  The microhpne I always fall back 
on is the  turner super sidekick with the turner plus 3 and plus two 
next in line.
