Just a practical joke - he knew the bill by the way he had it folded or
in which compartment of his wallet he had placed it.

I suppose if someone asked you to smell a unfamiliar bill, you could
guess.  I'd probably ask :
Is this one of those purple fives? has the aroma of cheap wine.
