They're not requiring them to be both analog and digital, but they've mostly
been running that way since the summer to make sure the digital equipment is
working as it should, find out what if anything they have to get used to for
differences, and now all the cable companies have already switched so as far
as I knot they can't pick up an analog signal anymore. Some channels have
already switched, so now to keep analog up and going, they need to run both
because there's both out there. They're not required to have both by the
FCC, it's the transition that's requiring it right now. the problem is, to
run both is costing most upwards of $10K per month above and beyond the
usual bills and with them having trouble filling commercial slots,
supposedly, they can't afford to do it any longer. As I said, some channels
around my way and I'm sure other places too, pulled the plug on analog
already, 2 channels around here did it because they had problems on the
analog side and decided not to fix it and one small station just couldn't
afford to do both at the same time so they picked transitioning earlier
figuring if they had major problems with the digital equipment they still
had the option of switching back if they had to while they fixed it.
