Steve, could you have had a large static charge zap your rig or a
nearby lightning hit? Very sorry to hear about that. May you
have a happier new year! 73, Jim WA6EKS

Subject: TS-590s SK - R.I.P

Don't know how or when, but I've smoked my TS-590s. Noticed
some odd
behavior, No ALC showing, no matter how high the carrier level
(CW),
or mic gain (SSB) was set. Power seemed erratic. Was
possible to
see 100 watts out on cw, but that needed carrier set to around
80, but
still no alc showing.

I tried a different power supply, different power cable,
reloaded
firmware and settings, checked all coax and other connections,
and
finally rubbed my hand over it chanting" Hom in a, hom in a, hom
in a".

Somewhere along the way, I got a whiff of burned component from
inside.
The "magic smoke" as they say.

Just ordered a 590SG from HRO, year end discount of $1,450. I'll
see
what damage I can do to this one.
. I'll pull the voice board out of the corpse and do a
transplant.
Some time in the future I'll send the dear departed out for
service/autopsy.

It's just a hobby. 73, Steve KW3A
