Subject: Cell phone provider info

Hello,

Since the majority of the posts on this list are not ham related,
I guess, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Because of the recent discussion about cell phone providers, I
wanted to comment as I recently changed providers.

I was previously a cingular customer and was happy with
everything except the price. In fact, I got a 10% discount off
retail because the service was bundled with a package of other
services from the phone company. However, it was still costing
me close to $30 per month although my wife and I seldom used more
than 45 minutes per month. Also, I had purchased the Talks
software so that our phone would talk. But the cost just was not
justified. So I put a for-sale sign on my phone via the internet
and began looking for a different provider. I should also
mention that my wife wanted a more conventional button
configuration on the phone's dial pad.

Since the following may look a bit like spam, I must say that my
only interest in the following company is the $40 I spent for the
Nokia 1100 phone which included 300 minutes of air time. I went
with a company called Net Ten,
www.net10.com

877-836-2368 or 877 t e n c e n t. This is a GSM cell service
which gives you a flat rate of ten cents per minute, no roaming,
regardless of time of day. They apparently have reciprocal
agreements with other carriers as I have had no coverage
difficulties in other areas, and, as I said, no roaming. There
are no real gotchas that I can find although I find it a real
irritant that one cannot get a human to tell you how many minutes
you have remaining, only the info on your screen. Also, one must
replenish minutes before the renewal date and before the minutes
he presently has have expired. If you do not, you lose your
phone number. However, unused minutes roll over when you add air
time. I should mention that you can determine your renewal date
on the internet.

The phone is no frills; however, we don't care about that since
the more exotic stuff is not accessible without expensive third
party software.

In conclusion, there is no one size fits all when it comes to
cell service; however, this plan seems to meet our needs very
well, and we are not saddled with a long term contract. Also no
loss of unused minutes. Comments please.
