I was part of the inaugural class in 1968 to get tickets at the Kansas School for the Blind (later KSVH). We had our tickets for some time before we got any equipment but I recall finally getting permission to put a antenna on top of the ad building (18avq) and helped a SX 111 and DX 40 with an SFB tuning aid. I recall making my first contact at nearly lights out from the teacher's lounge and half the other kids running interference with the dorm housemothers and the other half leaning over my shoulders as I very nervously pounded out cw to a guy across town in Kansas City Missouri. I still have his QSL CARD but would have to dig it out to see who it was.

Since that time I understand many had gotten tickets but am not sure if still active club. I know some are still licensed but not others.

A major push was from Jerry Foster (I think W?0qwh) who was husband of the German teacher. both are dead now I think. Another decease was WA0SHE)Cleo Mahoney who was active in the county hunters group in the late 60s. I did meet her many years later when she was in Idaho visiting another county hunter here.

Any other alumni of that club still around?

thank you!

A short article in the "At the Foundation" section of July QST mentioned a
new radio club at the Texas School for the Blind. That got me to wondering
about how many such clubs used to exist, as well as how many are still
around.

I know that there were once clubs at Overbrook School in Philadelphia, and
at the Western Pennsylvania School in Pittsburgh. The Seeing Eye still
maintains a station at their training facility. I think there was also a
club at the old Arkansas Enterprises (Now Lions World Services) in Little
Rock.

My school in Mississippi organized a club briefly in the mid 70's.
Unfortunately, that happened after my graduation. The primary mover and
shaker in the club changed jobs and left town, and the equipment was stolen
during a school building expansion in the early 80s.

It would be neat to collect a list and brief history of these clubs, and to
see whose out there now.

Anyone want to roll this snowball a little further?
