What I'd like to know is: how is it that all of a sudden they can cut the price from $500.00 to $200,.00?

  can be more forgiving.  However, for free I can call and receive calls just 
  fine on the free phone that I got with my contract.  True, things like the 
  phone book, caller id etc are useless but I don't use it very much anyway. 
  now if I was going to use it as my primary phone that would be quite a 
  different story.
