Thanks, Bob.
I'll give these steps a try when I get the chance here.

Interestingly, I still have a loss of speech issue with my TS590 and old
Windows XP laptop. To be specific, whenever I start up the laptop, I don't
have Jaws speech, until I disconnect my USB interface cable from the TS590.
Then, once I re-connect the cable, my speech is restored, and all is well
with the TS590, the ARCP590 programming software, and my straight-through
serial interface for the N3FJP software.

All of this involves an annoying extra step, but things still work fine when
I'm done.

Subject: Re: Kenwood TS590 firmware update

Hi,

The Steps to upgrade are not difficult, but you must follow them exactly, or
you will have trouble. For those of us using an internal sound card, you'll
need to go in to your screen reader program and pick that sound card and do
not use the default sound card as the minute you hook up the 590 using the
USB cable, Windows changes the 590 to be your new default sound card and
you'll lose speech.

You should go to the Kenwood site

http://www.kenwood.com/i/products/info/amateur/software_download.html

and download the TS590 Com port ddriver, the ARCP590 2.0 control program,
and the Firmware update program version 2.0 These files download as zip
files and you'll have to unzip them.

First, you need to install the Kenwood com port driver if it isn't already
installed. Disconnect the 590 from its power supply or turn off the supply
and Hook up the USB cable between the 590 and your windows computer.
Reconnect the 12 volt power to the rig and you will immediately hear the USB
connect noise coming from your computer even though you haven't turned on
the 590 yet.
After the 590 is recognized by your computer, check to see what com port was
assigned to the silicon lab driver that Kenwood uses.

Then install and run the ARCP590 program and backup your rig's menu and
memory settings using that program. If you want to start from the factory
default, you can skip this step.

Then install and run the update 2.0 program. The program wants you to
sellect the com port to use, and You can find that in your device manager.
After you hit ok, the update program will give you instructions to follow.
Basically, Turn the 590 off, Hold the memory-in key while you press the
power button, and hit the A=B key and click ok on your computer, and the
update will start. After the computer says that the update is complete, You
have to hit the A=B key one more time to reset the rig, and your done.

If you saved your memory and menu settings, now you can restore them and
your finished.
