John, Could you e-mail me off the list. I would like to ask you several
things about the ALS-600 before I make up my mind for sure. My e-mail:

I have my ALS600 for over 3+ years without any problems. Any SWL greater
than 2.5 caused the protection to kick in. I usually run 450 - 500 W. I
have run close to 600W when trying to bust a DX pile ups. Bands used 80 -
10 on SSB never on CW.

I think that the ALS600 is just too fragile. My friend Steve, N9HE, has
had
3 failures like mine. In fact, Steve shipped one of his ALS600's back to
Ameritron along with mine for the same exact repair.

As for a lightning strike, I don't think the culprit was lightning, as the
only time my ALS600 amp was hooked up to an antenna was when I was
actually using it. When I wasn't using the amp, it was totally
disconnected from everything, and put in my closet.

that is completely unpardonable. unless you took a lightning strike, it =
is obvious that the amp was a lemon, as any amp worth owning should =
protect itself no matter what you do., even transmitting into an open or =
shorted coax should do nothing more than she the amplifier down, and I =
wouldn=92t own anything that was so weak and unreliable. This is an area =
that I imagine tube finals still beat solid state hands down, although =
having never owned an amp, and likely never to own one, i wouldn=92t =
know.
