Don't be so sure about the Elecraft's battery not holding up for a
field day. I couldn't swear to it, but it *was* designed as an
ultimate field day rig! Bear in mind, too, it was designed for low
current consumption. BTW, someone's worked out a lithium polymer pack
for the K2--slightly higher amp/hour rating, I believe, than the SLA
option, and I believe lighter weight.

While it's true the K2 has less frequency coverage than the FT-817, it
also has a better (more optomized) receiver, certainly on par with
radios costing twice as much...it compares very favorably with radios
like the FT1000 and Icom IC-746Pro and similar. My veterinarian has a
Ten-Tec Omni VI and prefers his K2 in a lot of situations, if that
tells you anything.
