Bill, you got it.  You can link from your computer to hams with computers, 
radio links, and repeaters all over the world.  Lots of guys use echo-link 
in your type of situation.  Friends make schedules and link to their friends 
through the service.  Some people have a visseral negative reaction to 
echo-link, but their are people who have a visseral negative reaction to 
about anything.  Mine is to beer in cans.
