Hi Tom,

I ran in to the same problem when my 8.1 machine crashed and I had to , as
microsoft calls it, refresh, or in other words, reinstall windows 8.1.

When I installed Winamp, no matter what I did, Windows Media Player
continued to be the default media player.

When I saw your messages about this problem, I just couldn't remember what I
had to do to fix it. So, I uninstalled winamp, ran an mp3 file and picked
Windows media player as the default player and then reinstalled Winamp.

Under file types, I checked all of the files listed and user account control
asked me if Winamp could make changes to my computer. I thought that the
problem was solved. No, No, Windows media player was still the default.

Then it came back to me, what I did to get my winamp working as the default
player.

First open control pannel. Look for the default programs link and hit enter
on it. Then look for the link, "set your default programs", and press
enter. Then you'll land on a help button and if you tab once, you'll be on
a list of programs. Look for Winamp and then tab until you hit the button
that says, make winamp the default program.. Then your all set. Winamp
worked again and was my default media player.

Now, if I could just get Live Mail to work right!

Lou:

I had my XYL help me wihh this, and we couldn't get the default to work,
unless we specified exact file types for Winamp to associate with. In fact,
we couldn't get the "associate with all file types" option to work either.

So, the work-around I finally decided on was to create a shortcut for
winamp, and then use the "open file" option to select the file I want to
play, and then have it play through Winamp.

This sure seems harder than it really should be, but it appears to be the
easiest thing to do right now, rather than possibly creating other
unanticipated problems.

Thanks to you and everyone on the list for tolerating this off topic thread.

Hopefully, others will benefit from this discussion as well by learning
about what I couldn't get to work for me, and what I figured out as a doable
workaround.

Tom,

I forget which OS you're using but I just looked in the vista control panel
and there is an item called default programs. Perhaps you can get it done
there if your OS has it. Lou Lou Kolb Voice-over Artist:
