That's right, water finds its own level.  Birds of a feather flock together 
Etc.  Just because everybody else is doing something doesn't make it right. 
I am sure we have all done things we shouldn't.  Technically when we burn a 
CD that is copyrighted we are stealing.  But most of us don't go out on the 
street selling them to everybody making money off of it.  And don't forget 
he was convicted even though he never served time.  So society also saw it 
as wrongdoing.
