Several people, including N3FJP himself, pointed me to the problem.
I would move to that field, then begin typing before the voice of my 
screen reader had a chance to tell me it was already filled.

That's a somewhat rambling way of saying I was simply in too big of a 
hurry to listen to what the screen was trying to tell me.

My dad is up there somewhere laughing and saying something like: 
"Didn't I tell you about taking your time a long time ago?"
