Dear Advocates:

Re questions about the potential impact of the new Section 508.

To quote EASI's Dr. Norman Coombs (his December 20, 2000 posting on AXSLIB-L
concerning the forthcoming announcement of the new standards):

"The impact of these [508's] procurement regulations go far beyond the Federal
government. Manufacturers who avoided modifying products to meet the special
needs of special consumers because they constituted a small market segment have
a new motivation to make such alterations. The government is a major market
segment which few manufacturers can ignore. While the regulations do not place
direct requirements on commercial companies, they will need to comply with the
regulations unless they are willing to write off the government as a customer.
These regulations will undoubtedly become a de facto standard that will have
sweeping implications all across society."

Great things also happen despite the law because they are the right thing to
do, good for business (people with differabilities are consumers too and our
numbers are increasing), and/or people simply like and enjoy whatever these
great things may be.
