The job description below is for a Systems Librarian at the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational materials to people who are blind or visually impaired. We produce two publicly accessible databases that are produced utilizing MARC format records. These databases are Louis, The Database of Accessible Materials for People who are Blind or Visually Impaired and AMP,  the Accessible Media Producers Database. These databases are accessible through our Web site at www.aph.org.

We currently are looking for a Systems Librarian who also possesses cataloging skills to help us continue to grow our services in this vital area.

Systems Librarian

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Resource Services, this position will work with Resource Services staff, Accessible Textbook Initiative staff, and Production department to convert textbook files to production ready formats. 
This position will offer technical support for production and translation processes and will be responsible for file and archive security. The position will perform maintenance and provide support for software and hardware and will design and implement new services to support Resource Services databases and systems. This position will perform original and copy cataloging and will establish and perform authority file work. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Work with APH file repository: convert publisher files and provide user support in setting up accounts. 
2. Develop existing relationships with publishing company technical support personnel to facilitate the conversion of publisher textbook files. 
3. Work with Resource Services and CTS to continue development, maintenance and support of an effective, accessible web interface and archive for outside agency retrieval of publisher files. 
4. Develop new databases and applications. 
5. Diagnose software and hardware problems. 
6. Perform maintenance and support on software and hardware. 
7. Perform system checks for data transfer and backup. 
8. Document and evaluate cataloging policies and procedures. 
9. Prepare statistical reports and develop long and short range plans. 
10. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned. 

Education, Training & Experience Requirements:
* Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program or equivalent experience preferred. 
* Two years of database management and two years of cataloging or abstracting and indexing experience. Knowledge of MARC formats, authority file maintenance preferred.
* Knowledge of software and hardware maintenance and upgrading. 
* Library skills in cataloging and electronic data archiving techniques. Strong organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. 

Salary negotiable based on experience and education.
