Health Policy Research Fellowship Program in Disability
and Managed Care


The National Rehabilitation Hospital Research Center (NRH-RC) and the
Georgetown Public Policy Institute (GPPI) at Georgetown University strongly
believe that public policies that directly affect the lives of people with
disabilities are greatly enhanced when people with disabilities are
involved in policy analysis and design.  The Health Policy Research
Fellowship Program in Disability and Managed Care provides an opportunity
for individuals with disabilities to obtain the graduate level credentials
necessary for leadership positions in health policy research and development.

Funding for this fellowship is provided by the National Institute on
Disability and Rehabilitation Research.  Candidates must meet the following
criteria:

The candidate must be a person with a significant disability.

The candidate must perform an internship at NRH-RC for the duration of the
fellowship.

The candidate will remain involved in the disability health policy field
for at least two years after completion of the fellowship.

Tuition and Stipend Amount
The fellowship award will provide two years of tuition (approximately
$20,280 per academic year) plus a monthly stipend of $850.

This fellowship is a two-year academic program leading to a master's degree
in public policy from Georgetown University.  Fellows will gain applied
research experience at NRH-RC.  

FORMAL COURSEWORK
In addition to talking the core courses, fellows will take their electives
in health economics and health policy research. 

DIRECTED READING 
Fellows will complete a reading program directed by NRH-RC staff that
focuses on health policy issues in physical disability and managed care. 

RESEARCH PRACTICUM /  INTERNSHIP
Fellows will spend at least 12 hours per week and a full-time summer at the
NRH-RC under the supervision of a senior researcher and are expected to
produce at least one publishable manuscript by the end of the fellowship. 

FELLOWSHIP SEMINARS 
Fellows will attend NRH-RC seminars on health policy issues and will
present their own research. 

All facilities at the NRH Research Center are fully accessible, including
worksites for wheelchair users.  Georgetown University is accessible and
exceeds the compliance standards of both §504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.  Georgetown's Office
Of Student Affairs will work with students who have any individual needs
that may require additional accommodation.

Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is the nation's oldest
Catholic institution of higher learning. It's location in Washington, DC, 
provides unparalleled access to the federal government and numerous
prestigious think tanks that are at the enter of national policy making.  
The GPPI is a professional degree program designed to instill the
analytical wherewithal and the understanding of human values so essential
to good governance. Approximately 75 new full-time students are enrolled
each fall. The GPPI boasts a renowned full-time faculty. In addition,
faculty are drawn from other Georgetown University departments and from an
exceptional pool of senior researchers and national policy makers. Classes
are seminar 
style and scheduled for afternoons and evenings to accommodate student 
internships.

 The NRH-RC, a health policy research center, Is dedicated to providing
research leadership on the major clinical and policy issues that affect
Americans with disabilities and seeks to serve as a catalyst In the
development of new ideas for disability and health policy. Research at the
NRH-RC covers a broad spectrum of topics, including the demography and
epidemiology of disabling conditions, the financing and organization of
health care delivery systems, health care utilization and costs, health
outcomes, health care reform, biomedical ethics, and other topics related
to the health and well-being of people with disabilities.

The application deadline for entrance in the Fall of 2000 is February 1, 2000.
International Students should apply by January 6, 2000.
