Correction--there is no overlap (as stated in my previous message)
between any of these events. My mistake. Sorry! Axel

Subject: Disabilities/accessibility-related programs at ALA Atlanta

Hi there,

For those of you attending ALA Atlanta, please note that there are a
number of programs offered that may be of special interest to the
members of this list. I'm aware of the following four events, but I
suspect that there are more:

1. Saturday, June 15, 8:30-10:30 LITA Program, GWCC - Room B308/B309

Topic: Keeping Up Appearances...How we Reinvented Our Library Website
for the 21st Century

Members of California State University, Los Angeles Web Development Team
will take you step by step through their library website redesign. They
will demonstrate how they updated their first-generation, static website
by: gathering and analyzing usage statistics and conducting usability
studies; exploring and implementing database-driven and dynamic web
design; and using accessibility tools to ensure ADA compliance.

Speakers: Holly Yu, Scott Breivold, Stephen Sottong, Chad Kahl from
California State University, Los Angeles.

2. Saturday, June 15, 10:30-12:00 ASCLA LSSPS, GWCC - Room B310

Topic: From Ivy Halls to Virtual Walls: Recruiting, Educating & Hiring
for Accessible Services

Panelists will discuss multiple approaches to accessible library
services focusing on recruitment of individuals with disabilities to the
profession, teaching students and staff how to work with patrons and
peers with disabilities, job search realities and interview strategies
for professionals with disabilities, and the importance of technical
skills and
savvy in providing accessible electronic services. Particularly
appropriate for library school educators, graduate students and
librarians who recruit, hire or train staff.

Speakers: Ellen Perlow, Manager of Information Svcs., SLIS Texas Woman's
University; Axel Schmetzke Ph.D., Associate Professor, Library
University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point; Mary Jo Venetis, Serials
Librarian, Dallas Public
Library; Simon Healey, Century Scholar (2001); David Faucheux, MLIS
Louisiana State University; Jenifer Flaxbart, Moderator, University of
Texas at Austin.

3. Monday, June 17, 8:30-10.00, LITA, GWCC - Room A311

Topic: Accessibility of Online Library Resources for Users with
Disabilities: An Overview of the Latest Research

Libraries must ensure that their information resources are accessible to
all users, including those with disabilities. Until recently, product
information about the accessibility of online information resources has
been scarce. The panel participants will review and discuss current
studies on the accessibility of library web pages, online catalogs,
online indexes and databases and e-journals. This information will
enable librarians to make better-informed procurement decisions and to
encourage vendors to develop truly inclusive products.

Speakers: Suzanne Byerley and Mary Beth Chambers, University of
Colorado, Colorado Springs; Bryna Coonin, East Carolina University;
Judith Dixon, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically
Handicapped, Library of Congress; Axel Schmetzke, University of
Wisconsin - Stevens Point.

(Note: This event was incorrectly described in the March 2002 issue of
American Libraries.)

4. From a message posted earlier by Margaret Brill: "ALAD (Academic
Libraries Accessibility and Disability Services Discussion Group) will
be meeting on Monday June 17th from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM in the Georgia
World Congress Center, Room A406. The topic is Current Issues in
Assistive Technology, but we will also discuss the new name (not yet
registered with ASCLA) and choose a new Chair."

Greetings,

Axel
