Digital reader/printer technology has also come a long way in the last few
years. Canon and Minolta both make digital reader/printers that convert
microfilm/microfiche to text which can be printed out in larger type or put
onto disk (if the machine is properly set up and networked, also emailing
the results) and then read by a screen reader where necessary. Local sales
representatives of these companies will know who they've sold machines to --
usually larger public or academic libraries. The question of who will
perform the service without charging for it is still open.

If this is something that is needed for school I would think that making the
accessible copy would be the responsibility of the school.
If that is not the case you should be able to take the microfiche to the
local public library or possibly an office equipment dealer or printer and
have a print copy made. The quality of the print will depend on the quality
of the microfiche. Most of the newer microfiche reader/printers have the
ability to make some improvements in the quality of the print. From the
copy you can then make a large print copy.

Subject: Making microfiche accessible?? Help??
I had the following question forwarded to me. If someone can help, please
e-mail me [log in to unmask]
Quoted request follows:
My daughter is legally blind and we have acquired a book that is available
only on microfiche. It is 7 microfiche with 98 book page images on each
fiche except the last one which has about 20. We are trying to find an
organization that would be able to print out the individual pages from the
so that my daughter can read the book. Could you give us any directions
toward accomplishing this?
