The Center on Disabilities at California State University, Northridge
presents the Sixteenth Annual International Conference, "Technology and
Persons with Disabilities"
March 19-24, 2001, held at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport and Los Angeles
Airport Marriott Hotels

Introduction
By design, "Technology and Persons with Disabilities" is a comprehensive,
international conference where all technologies across all ages,
disabilities, levels of education and training, employment, and independent
living are addressed.

Audience
The audience of the conference is diverse. It includes a large number of:
- Persons with Disabilities and their Family Members
- Special Education Teachers
- University Professors and Researchers
- Occupational and Physical Therapists
- Alternative & Augmentative Communication Clinicians
- Manufacturers, Distributors, and Developers
- Community Agency Personnel
- Governmental Policy Makers
- Private and Public Rehabilitation Service Providers
- Rehabilitation Engineers
- Assistive Technology Practitioners and Suppliers

Content
Speakers are encouraged to share new information about hardware, software,
adaptive devices, access to technology, training programs, and results of
research in any area of assistive technology. In brief, if there is a good
idea about the use of technology among persons with disabilities, please
submit a paper for consideration.

General Sessions
This is an invitation to submit a paper for consideration as a General
Session. General Sessions are either 30 or 60 minutes in length. General
Sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, Thursday, March 22, Friday,
March 23, and Saturday, March 24. In submitting a paper for consideration,
speakers agree that their paper may be scheduled at any time on any of
these days at the discretion of the conference staff.

Features for 2001
If giving a paper in the Internet/WWW or Augmentative and Alternative
Communication (AAC) area, please note on the proposal form under "Topic".
The Internet/WWW sessions need to be identified as these are blocked into
special session rooms. Sessions in the area of AAC need to be identified as
these are blocked into the Hilton Hotel whenever possible. For all other
categories simply check "Other". A computer lab with Macintosh and PC's
with Internet connection for computer platform presentations are also
available -- please specify "Hands-on Computer Lab".
To review the kinds of presentations that have been accepted in the past,
please access the 2000 Proceedings on our home page at: www.csun.edu/cod/
Papers from the international community are warmly welcomed.

Equipment & Set-Up
All session rooms are set theater style and are equipped with one hand held
microphone and one lavaliere microphone. Please indicate on the proposal
form what equipment is required for the presentation. It is expressly
understood that any equipment not listed on the proposal form is the
responsibility of the presenter. If more than 20 minutes set-up time is
needed, contact our office before January 5, 2001.

Information in Alternative Formats
Speakers are responsible for providing their own handouts and promotional
materials in alternative formats. Please recognize that it is difficult to
predict the composition and the needs of the audience in advance.
Therefore, speakers should make an announcement at the beginning of their
presentation that they are willing to provide materials in alternative
formats as needed and will distribute shortly after the conference.

Speaker's Fee
Every speaker and panelist, including exhibitors who are making
presentations, must pay the Speaker's fee. Every speaker pays the full
Speaker's fee even if attending for only one day or part thereof.
Speaker's fee for presenting in the General Sessions is $329, if received
no later than January 5, 2001 and $359, if received after January 5, 2001.
The Speaker's fee includes all the activities of March 21-24, 2001: Opening
Session and Keynote Address, all General Sessions, and entrance into the
Exhibit Halls during the conference.

Please note: All speakers whose papers have been accepted will be billed
the Speaker's fee.  If the speaker withdraws, it is the speakers
responsibility to notify the Center on Disabilities of the cancellation by
written notification.  Non-attendance does not constitute an official
cancellation.

Proceedings for 2001
The Proceedings of the 2001 conference will be published only in electronic
format. The Proceedings will  be posted on our Home Page prior to the
conference and participants will be encouraged to review sessions of
interest in advance. Authors retain copyright to their own materials.

Submitting Papers Electronically
Speakers must submit an electronic copy of their complete paper with their
proposal form. The paper should not exceed five (5) pages in length
including all references, endnotes, bibliographies, etc. Incomplete papers
will not be accepted.

Please follow these guidelines in preparing the document:
- Start with the title of the paper in uppercase letters, then the
author(s) and their contact information (optional), followed by the body of
the paper, and finally, endnotes or references. Paper should not exceed
five (5) pages in length.
- Do not use footnotes, headers, footers, or page numbering.
- Do not use numbers for referencing in the text. Instead, use keywords or
sections for referencing (i.e., in the paragraph below . . .; at the
beginning of this paper . . .; in the third paragraph . . .).
- Present tables vertically rather than horizontally, without tabs or indents.
- Special characters: for Trademark symbol, use the letters (TM) in
parenthesis, for Copyright symbol, use the letter (C) in parenthesis, and
for Registered Trademark symbol, use the letter (R) in parenthesis.

It is preferred that the paper be formatted as an HTML document using the
template below (Section A).  If unable to format the document in HTML,
please follow the instructions in Section B.

If graphics are included, attach them as .gif or .jpg files with
appropriate links from the text where graphics occur. It is the speakers
responsibility to include "Alternative Text" on all graphics (per
accessibility guidelines).

Section B - ASCII
Save the file as a Text Only (.txt) file without word processing codes.
(You may use word processing systems like WordPerfect or Microsoft Word,
but you must save the file as a Text Only file).  Name the file using the
first six letters of the presenter's last name, followed by the first
initial of the presenter's first name.  For example: Jodi Johnson's file
name would be listed: Johnso_J.txt or Johnso_J.html

Send proposals and complete papers by EMAIL
1. Access the proposal form through our website at www.csun.edu/cod/
Fill out completely and send - the form will automatically be sent to our
email address.
2. Attach the complete paper to an email and send to [log in to unmask]
Please use name of presenter #1 in the subject/regarding line. If the paper
contains graphics, include those as attachments.

Hotel Information
The official hotels of the conference are the Hilton Los Angeles Airport
and Los Angeles Airport Marriott. It is suggested that you make your
reservations early to receive the discounted conference rate (cut-off date
is March 4, 2001). When making reservations refer to California State
University, Northridge, Center on Disabilities.

Please let the hotel know of any special accommodations needed at the time
reservations are made. Both hotels offer free shuttle bus service between
LAX airline terminals and the hotel.


Conditions of Presentation (please read carefully)

1. No paper will be considered unless it is submitted with the proposal
form and complete paper. Incomplete information will delay review process.

2. The title of the paper must be succinct and accurately describes the
content of the presentation.

3.All submissions are within a 30 or 60 minute window. It is expressly
understood and agreed that the Center on Disabilities may schedule papers
at any time on any of the conference days at its discretion.

4. Speakers should submit an electronic copy of the complete paper along
with the proposal form no later than October 2, 2000. The complete paper is
not to exceed five (5) pages in length including all references, endnotes,
bibliographies, etc.

5. Speakers agree that the submission may be published and distributed
electronically. No compensation is offered to speakers/authors. Authors
retain copyright to their own work.

6. The discounted Speaker's fee for presenting in the General Sessions is
$329, if received no later than January 5, 2001. After January 5, 2001, the
Speaker's fee is $359.

7. Every speaker and panelist, including exhibitors who are making
presentations, must pay the Speaker's fee. Every speaker pays the full
Speaker's fee even if attending for only one day or part thereof.

8. "Acceptance" of a paper is defined as:
- Official notification from the Center on Disabilities on or before
December 1, 2000.
- Receipt of either discounted Speaker's fee of $329 by January 5, 2001, or
late Speaker's fee of $359 after January 5, 2001

9. Speakers agree to notify the Center on Disabilities of any cancellations
by writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official cancellation.

10. It is very important to distinguish between authorship and those who
are actually attending and presenting at the conference. On this proposal
form, please indicate only the presenter(s) who will actually be attending
and presenting at the conference. Authorship within your paper will be
recognized when published electronically.

11. Speakers equipment needs are to be finalized no later than February 2,
2001. It is understood that any equipment changes after February 2, 2001
are the responsibility of the speaker.

12. Speakers agree to provide any handouts and other presentation materials
in alternative formats (Braille, large print, diskette) for participants
requesting this service.

13. Speakers wishing to attend the Preconference Sessions of March 19-20,
2001, pay an additional fee of $249 per day, if registered by February 23,
2001. After February 23, 2001, the fee is $279 per day. The schedule of
these sessions will be available in the speaker acceptance packet.

14. The official language of the conference is English. All informational
material will be printed in English, as well as all papers and conference
presentations.
