Greetings,
My first post to the list after lurking a week or so; I tuned in at the
right time, it seems.
Following along with the discussion of accessible catalogs, I'd like to
find out if anyone has experience with network access to SilverPlatter
products (WinSPIRS or WebSPIRS).
In addition to access to the databases, we want good access to web-based
services of the university (mail, scheduling, etc.) and other data
providers (ProQuest Direct, UMI Dissertation Abstracts, etc.)
What screen reader has worked best in a NT or Novell environment? What
works best with SilverPlatter products? And which web browser works best
with what screen readers (particularly when running WebSPIRS)?
We currently have a stand alone station that is used primarily for
scanning, though we run DOS JAWS with PC-SPIRS to read from a cd in the
local drive on occasion. We would probably retain this set up for scanning.
Would a dedicated network workstation be best for database access, or is it
feasible to consider installing a screen reader on an existing workstation
and invoking it only when an adaptive sessions was required?
Also, I'd be particularly interested to hear from anyone who has used a Mac
solution in this regard. We have the hardware on site to implement this,
but I'm not sure a screen reader.
Thanks,
Gary
