FYI, From the ALA Executive Director's Report to Council (note #12):

1) ALA TechSource used its presence at the 2001 Midwinter Meeting to introduce the end results of a year of research, redesign and redirection, including:
1. A familiar logo that builds brand identity for the unit's new name (ALA TechSource was formerly Library Systems Newsletter)
2. A redesigned print version of Library Systems Newsletter that is visually more appealing to today's reader and better compliments author Richard Boss's editorial style
3. A redesigned print version of Library Technology Reports that is more user-friendly and addresses an expanded range of topics
4. www.techsource.ala.org, going live February 2, a news and commentary website that provides daily columns, features and news items of interest to library technology specialists and management
5. Library Technology Reports Online, an alternative subscription to the print version accessible February 2 at www.techsource.ala.org
6. Searchable archives for Library Systems Newsletter and Library Technology Reports accessible March 1 at www.techsource.ala.org

2) On January 23, the FCC released the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) Notice of Proposed Rule Making. The FCC published the Notice of Proposed Rule Making in the Federal Register on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. (You may download the Notice of Proposed Rule Making now at www.ala.org/cipa/) Comments are due fifteen days after publication (February 10, 2001) and Reply Comments are due seven days later (February 17, 2001). The procedures for making Comments and Reply Comments are provided in the Notice of Proposed Rule Making on pages eight through ten and must be strictly followed.

3) The December 2000 issue of LITA's journal, Information Technology and Libraries, features article on user-customizable library portals. Contents and abstracts are available at http://www.lita.org/ital/ital1904.html

5) Four LITA Regional Institutes are scheduled for spring:
1. "Database-driven Web Sites" will be offered March 22 in Chicago and April 20 in Philadelphia (with PALINET).
2. "Web Proxy Servers and Authentication" will be offered March 23 in Chicago and April 20 in Birmingham, Alabama (with SOLINET). Discounted registration is available for those who attend both Chicago institutes. Descriptions are available at http://www.lita.org/institut/index.html

12) ALA will have a new area in the exhibits at Annual Conference called the Accessibility Pavilion. It's not just about services for people with disabilities, though that's a strong emphasis. It's about Equity of Access for all people and will feature exhibitors who have never been to an ALA Conference before. We believe that the Accessibility Pavilion is the first of its kind in a library trade show. We're working to make the area accessible, so it can be a model for trade shows, especially in the library community. The Accessibility Pavilion is a joint project of the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), and Conference Services. Ideas for vendors to invite to participate in this new event can be sent to Audrey Gorman ([log in to unmask]).
