What types of adaptive technology is your library using?
We have available:
Screen reading software: JAWS, Kurzweil 1000
Magnification software: ZoomTxt Xtra level 2,
Learning disabilities software: Kurzweil 3000.
equipment: camera magnification to PC monitor, CCTV magnifer, document
scanner
The active use over the past year has consisted of Learning Disabilities
software--Kurzweil 3000
What are some of the challenges you have with assistive technology?
budgeting for upgrades; staying current with software when students who
need that particular application are not on campus; deciding where in the
library voice recognition should be used.
How were you able to budget for this type of technology?
Funds for the original software and workstation were expended from
leftover "special needs" budget about five years ago. Hardware is
purchased from consortium monies; state library minigrant of $2,500 was
used to purchase equipment and software for use of Kurzweill 3000.
Software maintenance agreements for upgrades  are budgeted for each year.
What suggestions would you give other libraries that are in the process of
integrating assistive technology into their exsisting services?
Deal with budgeting justification questions from the standpoint that you
are providing access to resources rather than justifying based on numbers
of users. Work with community groups that would have knowledge of
particular populations; identify what other "model" libraries of a similar
type so that you can identify software and hardware. Listen to those
clients and students who are actively using your services.
