EASI Online Activities for May:

EASI has an exciting Internet voice chat Web conference on accessible
e-voting scheduled for May 12.  It is based on a special issue of the
e-journal, Information Technology and Disabilities (the link here takes you
to the contents for Vol. X which contains 2 numbers of the Journal and the
voting issue is at the bottom half of the contents page):

1  Beginner Barrier-free Web Design:
Web pages can be created using Universal Design principles permitting their
use by people with different browsers, different connection speeds, palm
pilots, PDA's and by people with disabilities using adaptive computer
technology. They can also be created in ways that exclude many of the above
users. Beginner Barrier-free Web Design will prepare you to create web
pages that are visually appealing and still permit full access by users

2  Barrier-free E-learning
University, business and public schools all are adopting one or more forms
of distance learning type technologies for delivering education and
training. Sometimes this actual distance learning and sometimes it is part
of campus courses. It is simultaneously praised and roundly condemned. In
any case, it is sweeping across America and into other countries. One of
the results of the rapidity of this explosive growth is that little
attention has been paid to making these technologies accessible to people
with various disabilities. Modern adaptive computer technology has the
potential to make these technologies more accessible to such students than
any previous form of education. However, the wrong technology choices may
erect new and needless barriers to the full inclusion of these students in
their ability to use of e-learning systems.  The syllabus and registration

3  Low End Assistive Technologies
Many assistive technologies are complex, sophisticated and frequently
expensive. While they are powerful, versatile and can readily be modified
to meet individual needs, there are some other assistive technologies that
are less expensive and still fill an important gap in the array of tools to
support users with disabilities. They will in no way replace the more
professional applications. However, for someone with a less severe
disability or a temporary disability or for someone wanting experience with
assistive technology before making a significant purchase, they are
important tools to explore. For a
small institution with tight budgets, these technologies can be kept
available to provide support for a wide range of people with disabilities.
The law
requires that institutions have accommodation plans in place rather than
making ad hoc adaptations. These applications would permit accommodating
someone's
needs until a solution more suited to that person's needs can be
