BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Jean Blackwell Hutson Library Residency Program offers an
underrepresented individual the opportunity to pursue a challenging career
in academic librarianship through a two-year, post-M.L.S. position at the
University at Buffalo Libraries.  Residents are introduced to the rapidly
changing complexities of academic librarianship through reference and
instructional services, collection development, technical services, access
services, Web development, administrative assignments, and special projects.

The Residency begins with one year of a general introduction to public
services with the Arts & Sciences Libraries, including extensive training
and experience in reference and information literacy services for the
campus.  The Resident will also be encouraged to begin pursuing possible
specialty tracks to provide focus for year two.  The second year will be
tailored to meet the Resident's individual interests.

All residents are responsible for completing either a scholarly article for
a peer-reviewed journal or a special project.  Resident involvement in
professional associations relevant to individual long-term career goals is
also supported and encouraged.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Recent completion (2000 or later) of the M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited
institution.  Applicants should have no more than two years of post-MLS
professional experience.  Candidates should possess excellent oral and
written communication skills, ability to work within a team environment,
general knowledge of electronic information sources, commitment to
scholarship/professional development, and be a member of an underrepresented
group (African American, Asian American, Latino/Hispanic American, or Native
American).

Experience with HTML, computer applications, and information technology
highly desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Appointment to a non-tenure track, non-renewable, two-year  position as
Visiting Senior Assistant Librarian at a minimum salary of $38,000; 15
annual vacation days; health and dental benefits; choice of retirement
options including TIAA/CREF; tuition assistance; full support to attend two
professional conferences annually; and enthusiastic mentoring.

ENVIRONMENT:

With seven major units (including Health Sciences and Law) and one branch,
the University at Buffalo library system has collections of over three
million volumes; extensive electronic resources; subscriptions to over
22,357 serials and periodicals; and 4.4 million microforms and government
documents. Students and faculty are served in the Libraries by over 123
professional staff, 58 support staff, and student assistants. The Libraries

The University at Buffalo is New York's largest State University Center with
an enrollment of over 25,000 students. A member of the prestigious
Association of American Universities (AAU), the University at Buffalo offers
a broad range of undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degree programs. It is
located on two major campuses. The South Campus with its ivy covered
edifices is located within the City of Buffalo and has been redesigned and
renovated as a major medical research center. The North Campus, a few miles
away in Amherst, NY, is a massive complex of academic buildings, art
centers, sports arenas and stadiums. The North Campus "academic spine"
provides a one mile complex of buildings, completely
enclosed from the elements. Shuttle service connects the campuses.

Buffalo is New York State's second largest metropolitan area with a
population exceeding 1.25 million. It is a vibrant city with a lively
theater district, important art collections, several institutions of higher
education, an outstanding symphony orchestra, and an active, national league
sports scene. A rapid transit system connects UB facilities and activities
with the downtown area, the waterfront, sports
arenas, theaters, and other cultural venues.
