Dear Accessibility and Diversity Advocates:

A special invitation to ALA Diversity Office Director Sandra Balderrama and
ALA Diversity Office Communications Officer Wendy Prellwitz

You are cordially invited to attend the ALA January 2002 Midwinter Conference
meeting of the ASCLA Century Scholarship Committee:

Saturday, January 19, 2002, 2-4 pm New Orleans' Morial Convention Center, Rooms
275-277 (part of ASCLA's All Committee Meeting session)

We have two fantastic Century Scholars, Rebecca Van Scyoc and Simon Healey, and
currently are looking for applicants for the 2002 Century Scholarship:
Application Deadline: March 1, 2002. Please help applicants to complete and
submit the required documentation in a timely way.
Have you recruited/applied to be a Century Scholarship Applicant today? See:
http://www.ala.org/ascla/centuryscholarship.html

Special Congratulations to Century Scholar Simon Healey, MLS, who graduated
this past week from the University of Pittsburgh.

Some topics for discussion at our meeting:

1) Reports on meeting participants' Century-related activities, recruitment
efforts: Expanding the ASCLA Century Scholarship Diversity Initiative, for
instance, through matching scholarships from public libraries, state library
associations, state libraries, etc.

a. Century Scholarship Jury Chair Elizabeth Ridler will report on Brooklyn
Public Library's matching Century Scholarship.

b. The Texas Library Association's matching Texas Century Scholarship. See:
http://www.txla.org/html/awards/scholar/century.html (Ellen Perlow)

c. Additional reports...

2) Advocacy/Century Awareness within ALA=all ALA divisions, offices, in
particular, the ALA Diversity Office, ALA Council... now that we have an ALA
Accessibility Policy: http://www.ala.org/ascla/access_policy.html

3) Outreach to LIS programs and their umbrella organization ALISE, other LIS
professional associations (IFLA, SLA, MLA, ASIS, Society of American
Archivists, etc; especially to those organizations/libraries that already have
diversity initiatives), the accessibility/assistive technology community, etc.

4) Funding: Possible grant opportunities, the ALA Planned Giving Program

5) Century as a great way to recruit new ASCLA members (and, in particular,
MOCs, a/k/a self-identifying members of the class) Accessibility is relevant
for everyone. So all ALA members should be ASCLA members!

6) Mentoring our Century Scholars and Applicants. Networking and helping to
find professional positions for our Century Scholars, [potential] Century
Scholarship applicants, MOCs searching for positions.

7) Actively involving our Century Scholars and applicants in ASCLA and in ASCLA
programs at ALA, for example: Simon Healey, Volunteer at ALA 2001 Accessibility
Pavilion - please see: http://twu.edu/~s_perlow/accessibilitypavilion.html
