Who is the chair of the accessibility assembly of ALA? If this is a
dumb question, I apologize in advance; I'm a public library board of
trustees member, but not a member of ALA. Kathie

I believe the ALA program Valerie may have been referencing was one
called, 'Able'minded. Program planners knew all the presenters and knew
that none of them were wheelchair users. If any of the presenters had
needed wheelchair access, that would have been specified in the requests
for program support that were submitted to ALA Conference Services; I am
confident they would have scheduled the program into a room with
wheelchair access for presenters if needed.

I hope anyone who had accessibility problems at the recent conference
will send comments and suggestions directly to Conference Services
staff, so they can continue improving services for ALA members. In
addition, the Chair of the Accessibility Assembly will be glad to
receive your comments and suggestions so the Assembly can continue to
advocate for our colleagues.

I respectfully second Ellen's suggestion. I would add that I attended
more than one program at the annual conference and was disappointed to
see that programs concerning disability issues particularly one
addressing the issue of discrimination, had the presenters seated on a
stage that was not accessible.

Accessible signage for the entire conference was non-existent and
information regarding the conference was difficult to find in an
accessible format.

ALA needs to be a strong advocate in the goal to make libraries
accessible to all users.

Dear Colleagues:

ALA has e-mailed members a survey concerning planning the future of
ALA's Campaign for America's Libraries.

In completing the (fully accessible?) survey may I encourage reminding
ALA of its own Accessibility Policy
(http://www.ala.org/ala/ourassociation/governingdocs/policymanual/librar
yper
sonnel.htm#54.3.2),
the need for ALA to fully practice and promote this policy, and under
promotion of literacy, the inclusion of Braille and ASL literacy.
