I was waiting for someone with Ruby Open Book experience to way in before
responding since our Access Technology Workstations use Kurzweil as the
scanning and reading software package. As Jeff stated, in the last four
years many of the "leading" access technology products nhave now overlaped
and provide additional options outside their original application. Screen
magnifers now have the ability to provide limited screen reading abilities
and scanning and reading software can do limited screen reading or screen
magnification. The important word here is limited.

However, as a librarian providing access technology services to the public
and as a legally blind patron, the last piece of software the adaptive
specialist should have removed would be the screen reading application. The
only time IT should mess with JAWS (or Window Eyes) is if it breaks and
needs troublshooting.

While current access technology products applications do overlap, here at
the Free library our public Access Technology WOrksatations consist of a
screen reader, screen magnifer, scanning and reading software and Braille
Translation Software coupled with a CCTV system as well. This allows our
blind and visually impaired patrons to access both print and electronic
library resources.

I hope this helps
