GSE Stock Exchange Opens Week Stronger

March 16, 1999

ACCRA, Ghana (PANA) - The Ghana Stock Exchange Monday opened the week
stronger as it struggled to shake off the bearish sentiments that have
dominated trading since the beginning of the year.

The GSE All-Share Index, the main market indicator, gained 3.74 points at
830.39, up from last week's close of 826.65 points.

The volume of shares traded more than doubled from 55,140 shares Friday to
134,000 shares but there was only one price change.

Market capitalisation also finished higher at 3,277.37 billion cedis from
the previous 3,271.49 billion cedis even though more than half of the 21
listed equities could not make sales.

Offers opened the week lower at 2.566 million down from the 2.751 million
cedis but bids went up slightly to 597,200 up from the previous 539,200.

In the broader market, only Guinness Ghana Limited made a gain of 50 cedis
to open the week at 900.
