FACULTY - POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Sociology Department

 Position:      The Sociology department invites applications for a
tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin September
2001.  Candidates are sought with specialties in one or more of the
following substantive areas:  (1) Law/Crime/Deviance, (2) Family, (3)
Population Studies, and (4) Social Organization/Inequality.  Salary
commensurate with qualifications.

Duties: Teach courses that contribute to one or more of the substantive
areas above, as well as courses appropriate to core requirements
(statistics, methods, theory) for the major.  Research and publication is
required.  Participation in a small MA program is also expected.

Qualifications: The Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment.
Candidates
are also required to demonstrate competence or promise for teaching and
conducting research in one of the specified specialty areas. An ability
to
address teaching needs in more than one area of specialization and
promise
for serving a diverse student population are desirable. The department
seeks
candidates who can contribute to a strong undergraduate liberal arts
program
of instruction, including research collaboration with undergraduates,
while
also maintaining an active program of original scholarship.

Department:     The department has ten faculty and offers the BA and the
BS
degree in Sociology, and the BA in Education degree (taken as part of
Western's teacher education program), as well as the MA degree.  The
department maintains a computer laboratory for undergraduate instruction,
social and demographic data resources, and a center for survey research.
We
continue to seek to further diversify the backgrounds of the members of
our
department and strongly encourage applications from minority and women
scholars.

University:     Western Washington University is located in Bellingham,
Washington, which is situated on a series of hills overlooking northern
Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.  The metropolitan areas of Seattle,
WA
and Vancouver, BC are nearby (85 and 55 miles, respectively) and the
Cascade
mountains are only a one hour drive from Bellingham.  Western is the
largest
of three regional state universities in Washington and has an enrollment
of
approximately 11,000 students.
