The King Coalition, The Urban League, Madison Area Ministry, and Women in Focus will again sponsor a variety of events that bring the Dane County community together to reaffirm our continuing commitment to build a just community out of our racial, religious and economic diversity. The public is invited to the following events to honor a man who gave his life for this purpose:

Monday January 21, 17th Annual City-County Observance: Beginning at 5:30 p.m. the Crossroads in the Madison Civic Center will feature the Fountain of Life Gospel Ensemble and the Yonim Dancers followed by the singing of freedom songs. At 6:15 p.m., the program will move into the Oscar Mayer Theatre where Madison Mayor Sue Baumann and County Executive Kathleen Falk will present the annual City and County Dr. King Awards.

This year's observance will be highlighted by a performance of Madison's Call For Peace Drum and Dance Company. Through traditional drums, contemporary music, and powerful movement they weave the pageantry of life, the power of hope, and the wisdom of our elders into a tapestry of rhythms, colors and dance. Call for Peace has brought its message to audiences internationally, including Germany, Russia, Israel, and Egypt. They unite us as one nation and call on us to provide hope for our nation and the world.

Today, Friday, January 18, 15th Annual Free Community Dinner: Gordon Commons, Room B5, University of Wisconsin Campus, 717 W. Johnson Street (upper level of Lake Street Side). The dinner begins at 5:00 pm. Entertainment will be provided by Arts Are Prevention, which channels the energy of young people into positive musical expression.

Monday January 21, 4th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Service Day: Madison will join over 150 communities across the country in celebrating the national holiday honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by making it "a day ON, not a day off." Hundreds of middle and high school students are expected to attend an inspirational forum at the Monona Terrace Convention Center beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Later that day, these students will spread throughout Dane County where they will perform acts of volunteerism that help feed and clothe those in need. Students that performed at least 100 hours of volunteerism during 2001 will be presented with the Presidential Service Award. Channel 15's Mike McKinney will challenge those young people in attendance to likewise strive towards meeting this 100-Hour Challenge in 2002.

In addition to King Coalition sponsored events, other activities commemorating the legacy of Dr. King include:

Sunday, January 20, The Urban League's 18th Annual Breakfast Celebration: Outstanding young people will be inducted into the National Achievers Society. The 2002 Mann Scholars will be announced. The breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. in the Edgewood High School cafeteria, 2219 Monroe Street, Madison. Sponsored by the Urban League of Greater Madison, Inc. Tickets are available for only $5 at the door. Call (608) 251-8550 for more information.

Saturday, January 19, I have a Dream Ball: Begins at 8:30 p.m. at the Edgewater Hotel. Proceeds support scholarships. Call 833-8424 for more information. Sponsored by Women in Focus.

Saturday, January 19, "Today's Prisoners, Tomorrow's Neighbors": Begins at 10:00 a.m. Call Madison-area Urban Ministry at 256-0906 to participate in this simulation.
