 South Sudan peace accords signed

Mbeki believes peace in the south would herald a new dawn in Sudan
Sudan's government and southern rebels have signed agreements on the final elements of a peace deal to end one of Africa's longest-running civil wars.

South African President Thabo Mbeki was in the Kenyan town of Naivasha to witness the ceremony along with his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Bashir.

The agreement came after two years of negotiations, and within hours of the year-end deadline agreed with the UN.

It is hoped the accord will lead to a comprehensive peace deal in January.
