Former Ghana president Limann dies aged 65
04:21 a.m. Jan 24, 1998 Eastern

ACCRA, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Former Ghanaian President Hilla Limann died on
Friday in hospital in Accra, according to an official statement read on
state television and radio.

Limann, 65, who was president from September 1979 to December 1981, was
taken to hospital a few weeks ago with heart-related problems, according to
the statement.

He was elected and sworn in as president a few months after air force pilot
Flight-Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings overthrew the military government of
General Frederick Akuffo.

Akuffo and two other former military rulers were executed, but elections
went ahead as scheduled and Rawlings handed over power to the winner,
Limann.

On December 31 1981, Rawlings successfully staged a second coup, ousting
Limann, who he accused of leading what he called ``the most disgraceful
government in Ghana's history.''

Limann tried a comeback when the country reintroduced multi-party
presidential elections in 1992, but won only 6.7 percent of the vote
compared to 58.3 percent to Rawlings.

A few months before the 1996 presidential elections, which Rawlings won,
Limann opted not to run. He remained president of the People's National
Convention Party, whose candidate obtained three percent of the vote.
