AASPIRE INTERN* (WORKING TITLE)

IS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT FOR THIS POSITION
The City of Madison's AASPIRE program is an Affirmative Action initiative
designed to provide college students (see qualifications) professional work
experience and mentoring opportunities in various City agencies. This
program -- AASPIRE (Affirmative Action Student Professionals in Residence)
is designed to typically provide 8-9 weeks of full-time internship for a
select number of college students (see qualifications) interested in
pursuing a professional career in the public service.

Interns will be selected based on the degree to which their field of study
and career interests can be matched with the programs and activities of a
participating City agency and manager mentor.

Salary: $10.33 per hour

Hours: Up to 40 hours per week

Duration: Approximately 8 weeks, starting June 7, 1999

Number of Positions: A number of AASPIRE Internships will be available.
Department assignments will be determined based on work availability and
match with applicants.

General Responsibilities: These intern opportunities are designed to
provide
college level individuals with practical experience in a City agency. This
experience will involve exposure to managerial and policy-setting
operations
and activities, introduction to the organization structure and operations
of
the agency and the City as a whole, and participation in and/or
responsibility for the completion of actual work product and/or projects.
The work experiences will occur under the mentorship of one or more agency
managers and will involve a variety of professional experiences and
exposures. The work and experiences will vary depending on agency
assignment
with the background of the intern.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION:

Training and Experience: Applicants must have completed at least two years
of a four year college program, be recently graduated from a 4 year or
graduate program or a two year associate degree in Hospitality Management
or
other area relating to government service, or be participating in a
graduate
program compatible with a career in the public sector. Applicants with
applicable degrees who have experienced a significant period of
unemployment
or underemployment may also be considered for the AASPIRE program on a
case-by-case basis.

resume, and a letter of interest (no more than one typed page in length).
