South Africa stuns Brazil 3-1
17 September 2000
South Africa stunned tournament favourite Brazil in Brisbane on Sunday with
a 3-1 victory.
The result means that the Brazilians enter their final preliminary game
against Japan on Wednesday without being guaranteed a place in the
quarterfinals even if they win.
Japan secured its place in the next round with a 2-1 victory over Slovakia.
The results set Group D up for a dramatic finish as both South Africa and
Brazil have three points each with one game left to play.
Quinton Fortune, the Manchester United midfielder, opened the scoring for
South Africa in the tenth minute with a long range free kick. The Africans'
celebrations were put on hold a minute later by Edu who equalized for Brazil
with a header from 7 metres.
Second half goals from Nomvethe Siyabonga and Steve Lekoelea secured a
historic victory for the South Africans.
