Africa Awareness Rally
September 20, 2005

Did you know there are more people connected to
the Internet in New York City than on the entire
African continent?
Did you know Africa is the fastest urbanizing
continent in the world and that by the year 2030,
half of its population will be living and working
in towns and cities?
Did you know the number of African countries that
held multiparty elections has increased from
three in 1973 to 40 in 2005?
Did you know only six African countries were
engaged in armed conflict in 2004, compared to 14
in 1998?
ŠWhat Else Don't You Know?
/
Toward an Africa Without Borders is hosting an
Africa Awareness Rally *Tuesday, September 20,
2005* from *3 to 6pm* on *Library Mall* at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. The organization
is bringing together campus groups and community
figures to promote understanding and awareness of
African issues, events, and concerns. The
organization hopes this event will help inform
the Madison campus and the greater Madison
community of the cultural, historical,
linguistic, and political diversity of the
nations and peoples of Africa, the African
communities throughout the diaspora, and the many
organizations and individuals from UW and the
greater Madison communities who work to promote,
understand, and forward African causes.
The rally will include speakers discussing
current events such as the situations in Rwanda
and Sudan, the role of the media in American
(mis)understanding of Africa, Islam and Africa,
African literature and music, and the place of
Africa and Africans throughout the diaspora in
today's globalized world. The day will also
include African music, art, and poetry. In
addition, the event will help inform the
community about the many students and
organizations on campus working on African
issues. Such student groups as the Village Health
Project, Action Sudan!, AIESEC, the Arab Student
Organization, AMP: Analyzing Media Perspectives,
and the Black Graduate and Professional Scholars
will be taking part and sharing information about
their work. Also, community groups such as the
Madison Area Peace Coalition (MAPC) will be
taking part. It will be an opportunity to find
out how to get involved in African issues locally
and a chance to learn something new.
The rally is open to all and is free of charge.
