PowerUP: Bridging the Digital Divide is comprised of more than a dozen
nonprofit organizations, major corporations and federal agencies that have
joined together to launch a major new multimillion dollar initiative to help
ensure that America's underserved young people acquire the skills,
experiences and resources they need to succeed in the digital age. This
initiative is a unique partnership to give underserved youth access to
technology and guidance on how to use it. Based in schools and community
centers around the country, PowerUP not only will provide young people with access to the wide range of content and information on the Internet; it will also help them develop additional skills they need to succeed in the 21st
century.

The Urban League of Greater Madison, Inc. will be coordinating
Americorps*VISTAs at two PowerUP sites in Madison (relocation allowance
provided) - Bridge/Lake Point/Waunona Neighborhood Center and Vera Court Neighborhood Center. The League has been a leader in race relations, community advocacy and human service programming for African Americans, other racial/ethnic minority groups and low-income people in the greater Madison area for almost 32 years. Our work rests on the foundation of four major cornerstones: 1) Academic achievement for students of color and low-income students, 2) Employment and training for youth and adults of
color and those with a low-income, 3) Affordable housing, and 4) Community
advocacy in order to improve race relations, secure justice for those
discriminated against and increase the economic security of our
constituents.

In 1999, the Urban League of Greater Madison offered direct service programs to more than 1200 individuals and families through our many programs. A few examples include:

        * Almost 65% of the students enrolled in Project Jamaa, an academic
support and enrichment program, for three quarters ended the school
year with a higher GPA than when they enrolled.

        * 96% of the 14 year-old students that were employed in summer
internship through our year-long Pre-employment Program
successfully completed an 8-week paid internship with for-profit and
          non-profit entities.
