An older friend of mine has been having trouble with his computer and we
can't figure out what's happening. Perhaps someone here might have an idea.
He hasn't gotten any new hardware and no software lately. The computer is
an AST and this has happened once awhile ago and now happened twice in a
row.
What happens is the CD-ROM stops working and when we check the SYSTEM
applet in the control panel it says the system has been put into DOS
COMPATIBILITY MODE. The hardware profile for the hard drives has an
exclamation and says that it is because of an outdated driver or a damaged
or incomplete driver.
When we re-installed Windows 98 everything was back to normal again, but
then when he started the computer back up today it did the same time. He
had this problem once before when he was running Windows 95 and a re-install
of that fixed the problem too and it didn't crop back up until now.
It's a pain to re-install Windows all the time and I can't figure out how
to fix it any other way. Any ideas.
