I'll be sure to look up Redford's article, thanks.
If you're interested in reading about this part of the world, I highly
recommend Barbara Kingsolver's novel "The Poisonwood Bible". I learned more
about the more recent history of the Congo (late 1950s on) in this single,
exquisitely told novel than I have from any other source.
As far as its relevence to Paleofood goes, how both the natives and the
missionaries struggled with hunger under both colonialism and
"independence/dictatorship" (transition from hg lifestyle to mostly failed
attempts at agriculture) are interesting from our perspective. Well, I had
to make this on-topic somehow ;)
