Don't try to be too personal because it is not up to me Sahir personally to
solve the Y2k problem in the Gambia, as you tend to elaborate. As concerned
Gambians, we are all ambassadors of our beloved country "Gambia". We have
people appointed by the Gambia government as paid civil servants to served
us as our representatives in foreign countries to take care of these
matters. It is one thing if these paid ambassadors are taking immediate
actions when such allegations are levied on us or not. It is also your
responsibility Mr. Prince Obrien-Coker, my responsibility Sahir, and every
Gambian living aboard responsibility to take action, if possible, to defend
Gambia.
For your information the Swedish media has revoked their statement after
they got the correct information I forwarded to them.
Gambia, a small country that depends heavily on tourism, cannot afford to
see such statements been imposed on her from the international media without
any action taken. We living in the west know the impact that comes from the
media, which can be very devastating, if information is not handled
properly. The media in the west is very commercialise and has a strong
influence in the way people think and reacts, because of its might. So
brothers and sisters we have to be alert every minute to see what type of
news we consumed daily. Let every one of us ask him or her self what he or
her can do for Gambia, then we can move forward. The Gambia remains ours
never mine who rules.
Have a nice day and god bless every one.
Sahir.

Sahir,
If there is a Y2k problem in The Gambia, what can anybody do about it?
Solve it, that's all. Today is the 3rd of January 2000. I do not think one
should on, 3rd January, bother himself with regressive complaints for
something that should have been taken care of before the 1st of January.
Whether the BBC is true or not, it is too late to lament about it. The
Gambia, it should be understood cannot afford to waste millions of dollars
as the nations in the west. The latest information is that
(1) a baby borne yesterday in Denmark got its date of birth as 02/01/1900.
(2) In Italy all the prisoners have their sentences prolongated by 100
years.
(3) In China, a Videotheek was asking all those who were late to return a
video by one day, to pay an equivalent of $1000.
Case number 2 is possible. If you know that the Italians were for the past
100 years in the 19th century and now using Tapha Gates' product - what do
you expect?

We should learn, on this Bantaba, to accept and trust "certain" things
coming from The Gambia. The "so-called" Y2K bug supposed like pregnancy, no
one can hide it because it will one day come out. With what regards the
Millennium bug I personally trust our national taskforce than the BBC, VOA
or any Swedish media.
Be rest assured, have a nice trip to the Gambia and enjoy yourself. By the
way if because of what the Swedish national radio say you change your not to
go, kindly send me the money and I will make the trip for.

Let's face it brother, we have been fobbed by commercialism. We spent the
last 2 or 3 years trying to get a Y2K-complaint system with fixes and
upgrades, some of us even purchase the latest 'so-called' Y2K-ready systems
only to discover that it was all to no avail. I plugged on an old IBM 386
this morning and I did not see any difference with 5 years ago.

Prince Coker

On behalf of The Organisation of Gambians in Sweden, I Sahir drammeh have
today monday the 3rd January, written and also spåke to the Swedish national
radio about the defected information on our beloved country, that we have
serious problems with our banking-system,transport and telekommunikation
because of the year 2000. I told them that I my self spåke to Gambia when I
heard the news, but the information I got was the opposite. So as concerned
Gambians we are very disturbed with the faulty news and hope that before the
end of the day the reports will be revoked and corrected. I will be
following the developments before departing for Gambia on Wednsday.

With Love
Sahir Drammeh Spokesman/Treasurer (OGIS)

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

No Y2K problems in the Gambia

It has come to the notice of The Gambia National Taskforce on Y2K that the
British Broadcasting Corporation and other media houses on 2 January 2000
reported wide-ranging Y2K problems in The Gambia.

These reports are erroneous in the extreme. The National Command Centre of
the National Y2K taskforce hereby declare that the central bank, the energy,
telecommunications, financial, transportation and government sectors have
not reported any Y2K related problems as indicated in the reports.

These reports may have been due to a misinterpretation of information posted
on the website of the International Y2K Co-operation Centre in Washington.

We want to reassure the international community that The Gambia, which has
been working on the issue for several years now, has so far not experienced
any Y2K related problems in any given sector.
