Senegalese presidential candidate/religious leader to speak at UW

Sheikh Abdoulaye Dieye of Senegal, a presidential candidate and Sufi
religious leader will visit Seattle/Tacoma November, 15-16, 1999, for
speaking engagements at the University of Washington. On the Seattle
campus, he will deliver a lecture on "Spiritual Politics in
Senegal," 205 Smith Hall, at 7pm, Monday, November 15th, and on the Tacoma
campus, on "Politics and Community Development in Senegal" November 16, 2
PM, room BHS 104. An open reception will precede the Tacoma lecture from
12:00 - 1:45 in the Tacoma Room, GWP 320. For both presentations, Sheikh
Dieye will give his lecture in French, with English translations by his
assistant, Fara Gaye.

Sheikh Dieye is an elected member of Senegal's Parliament, the Deputy
Mayor of his town, St. Louis, and a candidate for the Presidency of
Senegal. A central theme of his candidacy stipulates increasing
development in Senegal by first developing its people through expanded
educational opportunities and international cultural and educational
exchange. His proposed Youth Project will also offer inner-city
African-American youth a chance to learn traditional African spiritual
values in a peaceful environment in Senegal.

Sheikh Dieye is a City-Planner and Landscape Architect, by profession. He
is also the current spiritual leader and Sufi Master of the Khidmatul
Khadim, the branch of service of the Muridiyya Movement which has centers
throughout the world and in several cities in the United States. The
Muridiyya was established in the late 1800s by its founder, Ahmadou Bamba,
a significant figure in the history of West Africa who resisted French
colonialism and revitalized West African spirituality. Abdoulaye Dieye's
message of peace is universal and transcends the differences of religion.
He advocates tolerance and acceptance of all cultures, peoples and
spiritual traditions.
