Just about everybody was poor in the south after the carpetbaggers and
scalawags were through. Bled the people dry. Most folks didn't own slaves
anyway, but it didn't matter to the vengeful northerners. But, I'm not
bitter... ;>)

Subject: family and the war.

my family left clark county georgia and ended up around coldwater alabama.
central about 55 miles east of birmingham. don't really know if they were
anything but poor in georgia, i know they were poor in alabama.

If it hadn't been for Sherman, the family would have stayed in Ga. and not
ended up in virtual poverty in Hackleburg, AL (NW corner of the state in
Marion Co.). The family is still fighting the war over that one, if you
know what I mean.
