JFW version 3 will allow you to use the screen reader to read a DOS box.
You need to be running Windows 95 as this is the 32 bit JFW. Set the
program to speak all via the insert plus s key. You may then look at the
DOS box with the Jaws cursor and hear the output from a command like dir.

This is not the kind of speech friendliness you get with your DOS screen
reader which probably has set files for applications like Word Perfect and
allows you a good deal of control over the way the DOS program speaks.

I still use Vocal Eyes when I go to DOSfor the reasons I just
mentioned and hope someone who uses JFW alone will describe his or her
experience when the computer says C:\WINDOWS>

I might also add that you can have a batch file run when you go to DOS. I
have one to change my path for DOS and an icon on my desktop for good old
WP 5.1.

One nice thing is the ability to run a program like readit and open a
second DOS box to format a disk or download a file.
