Whatever you do don't go for a winmodem i have read
terrifying stories about those things (especially when you
want to uninstall them) go for a "normal" 56k modem
providing your ISP offers 100% support for 56k modems (ask
around) because the connection speed doesn't only depends on
the quality of your phone line but also on the quality of
your ISP.

To focus my question on choice of modems, I stated I have
two modems,
56k, winmodem, v90,
33k, hardware driven modem, v34, ISA.
The question is whether it would be better to use the higher
speed,
higher standard modem over the other, given that it is a
winmodem.
When I posted this question I noted that my ISP has never
connected at
speeds over 28-31k. Since then I noted Juno connects at
44-45k over the
same phone line. I do not know why there is this difference.
