The external 68 pin connector is for UW devices like UW hard drives and
allows data transfer rates of 40 MB while the 50 pin connector is a Fast
SCSI 2 connector and allows for 20 MB transfer rates. Adaptec has cables
that allow you to use your internal 50 pin connector to connect external 50
pin devices. The cable plugs in to your internal connector, has two
internal connections and then has an external High density connector that is
placed in an open slot. The part number is ACK-501-50E HD 50 Internal to HD
50 External cable and runs $24.50. They also have a cable that doesn't have
an internal connectors on it but it is $28.00. You can find the cable at

d=14948. I am currently using one with 2 internal cd roms and an external
zip, jaz and scanner.
