Dear Mr. Mauro,
I am a curator here at the Smithsonian and working on several projects related to the history of people with disabilities. We are in the process of building our collections in this area and I am leading an exhibit team which will mount a showcase exhibit next July, on the disability rights movement.
Several friends have forwarded me the email which you have been circulating  about a possible Smithsonian exhibit. I regret that you did not look into the issue before calling for people to contact us. I have spent the last two years laying the foundation and cultivating support for a disability exhibit and I am concerned that much of this work may be jeopardized.
What you propose is similar to what I am working toward, but it is far more complicated to bring about than simply inundating the SI switchboard with ideas. To be taken seriously, such an exhibit requires objects, staff support, high level advocacy, budget projections, funding, and more.
